Microsoft Edge memory corruption [CVE-2018-8509]

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Edge (the affected version is unknown). Affected by this issue is an unknown function. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2018-8509. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $25k-$100k (estimation calculated on 10/10/2018). It expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future. The advisory points out:

A remote code execution vulnerability exists when Microsoft Edge improperly accesses objects in memory. The vulnerability could corrupt memory in such a way that enables an attacker to execute arbitrary code in the context of the current user. An attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the current user. If the current user is logged on with administrative user rights, an attacker could take control of an affected system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
